The Dutch brought coffee plants to Java over 300 years ago. The original Blawan plantation was founded in the 18th century, and some varieties of the plant are still cultivated today. In the same area, Jampit, Pancour, Kayumas, and Tugosari are also grown, where the coffee thrives in nutrient-rich volcanic soil and under large shade trees.

The coffee is hand-picked by the local community, many of whom live in villages located within the farm itself. Only the ripe berries are picked for pulping (removal of the fruit pulp), fermentation, and washing, before being sun-dried. Then, the coffee beans are hand-sorted by an army of women who meticulously remove damaged beans.
